place for thoughts on vloud, the future of online dsp, and other stuff. updated by me, trevor kampmann. theme an ode to JSTN's of muxtape.
We, at vloud, endured some really funny criticism in the early days. We hadn’t built vloud to be a replacement for the mastering process, but that’s what a lot of hilarious early critiques claimed.
Vloud was/is not about mastering. It’s also not about perpetuating the ‘loudness wars’. It’s about solving a problem which was born out of the ubiquitous use of MP3’s as band/groop calling cards on MYSPACE, VIRB, TUMBLR etc. Our logic was simply that there are a million bands trying to cut through the noise and not all have access to slick DAW’s with Sonnox Oxford TDM limiter/enhancers. Why not give people something easy to use, high-quality and free that’ll help their music translate better on shitty systems (i.e., laptop speakers)? So we built it and listened.
A lot of music has been processed through vloud but what’s been fascinating to see is the explosion of ringtone processing, as well podcasts, uses we hadn’t really thought of. HAPPENSTANCE. This may be a transient occurence, but it makes a hell of a lot of sense. Why use a $400 plugin on a kludgy DAW or even leave the cloud, when you can just push ringtones thru one of 4 presets all day.
That said we’re moving forward with solutions for all the use-cases being presented to us. We hope to add many new features this year. Thanks.
